My grandmother loved the rain. Loved the way it smelled, the way it brought new life into the garden and made her cherished trees grow. If ever there was a person with a plan, it was grandma, always encouraging me to save my pennies "for a rainy day," though I never quite knew what inclement weather had to do with me stashing away my change.
And yet, after all these years, somehow, yesterday it clicked.
As I emerged from the subway in my white skirt, umbrella actually in hand, I felt strangely prepared for the sudden downpour. I even shot a holier-than-thou Sucka! glance at the fools piling into the doorway of The Gap, trying to stay dry.
Then the wind came.
I ducked in fear as my umbrella proudly puffed out its chest into a giant "U" and, in a show of ultimate betrayal, proceeded to hurl me with all its might toward the side of the Hop On-Hop Off bus. By the time I managed to Mary Poppins my way into the lobby of my office building, I was drenched, pissed off, and doing the pee-pee dance, in hopes of drawing attention away from my now see-through skirt.
Suddenly the suckas outside The Gap had an advantage: racks of dry clothes at their disposal. A purpose for those rainy day pennies.
To be fair, I think that "saving your ten-spots for a rainy day" might be more apropos for today's economic climate. Still, there's something sweet and resourceful about dropping copper coins into a jar (clink! clink!) until they've built their way up to a new fall scarf, or ballet flats, or a necklace from that chick that sells jewelry outside Anthropologie on Fifth.
So I've got a plan. Next time the sky opens up, I'm curling up on my couch with a cup of hot chocolate and clicking away at my targets. Wanna peep?

Yes.

Me gusta.

I dig her whole look, head to toe.

Holla.

Maybe I'll get crafty.

Stop judging, it's my rainy day.
I have a feeling there'll be more of these to come...

Oh, that dreaded inside-out-umbrella situation. Awful!
Shopping always helps. Your picks are great! Love that fabric, the shoes, and that clutch is just perfect.
And, you need one of these...the one that reads "Rainy Day Funds"
Then you'll be fully prepared!
I love the rain too...especially the way it smells right before or after a down pour. I'm clicking with you on the couch in the next storm!
love this post! and all of your rainy day wishes. imagine the thrill of saving up your pennies to one day take them to the store and buy a treasure. much different than entering your cc # online. grandmother is always right and the rain is pure heaven.
in theory, since i live in such a sunny place, i should be able to save up for something like those jimmy choos since the rainy days are so few and far between. But no, i don't think so. they are gorgeous though. Damn they are.
haha! "the ultimate umbrella betrayal" you are too much :) Love your rainy day picks!
I love the rainy days and like you grams i love the smell it leaves behind. Your story cracked me up! I am glad you had a moment to rest and enjoy your day...and love that pouch you posted.
I love the Jimmy Choos. But, imagine if you were wearing those when your umbrella betrayed you. YIKES!
oh, i love the smell of summer rain, your very wise grandma, and although i'm sorry your umbrella didn't hold up, your recollection of getting caught in the rain (the pee-pee dance/holier than though sucka).
you made me laugh out loud. what's that song? "gray skies are gonna' clear up, put on a happy face."
I'd wear the KS flats and be crafty with AB at the same time. It's like killing two birds with one stone only nobody has to die.
I look at rainy days as the ultimate work day. I love buckling down when it's pouring out and there's no where to go. The sound of it is also very soothing. I do admit, whilst sitting at the computer all that day, I occasionally buy something nice for those sunny days!
great story. and yes, rainy days are perfect for ducking into a little shop you've been 'avoiding' for a while.
You're lucky you didn't get rained out by Chanel ;)
Ha, Franki, I like the way you think! And I love those cute change purses, Courtney!
bad weather always sends me into a personal economic downturn. nothing to do but shop. fab cllutch, btw.
love this post! great shopping pics - love the flats and the clutch :)
I always know I'm bound to get a chuckle when I stop by your blog.
Thanks for the giggles!
What a day! Everytime I wear white pants or white top I wait for something like this to happen! Sorta like a scene from Bridget Jones's diary, eh? Great clutch btw:) want it.
love the rain; love these looks.
Sounds good to me, you deserve all of them! I can almost see you doing that little dance...hehe.
my favourite time is when it rains at night when i go to bed :)
i miss the rain. i haven't seen it in a while.
ooh, i love rainy days, too! and you are HILARIOUS. and i covet those kate spade shoes....
Me gusta tambien! I love rainy days in the spring and summer more than the mid-January ones. Curling up with a hot chocolate and watching the rain come down sounds sooo fabulous and peaceful.
I get a kick out of seeing all the inside out broken umbrellas in the trash on rainy days. Great story.
Damn the inside out umbrella! But I love your picks.
I loved your comment about Kelly Bensimon! Has she had a lobotomy? I found this one too:
"I really want my girls to know there is a country outside of New York. It’s important that they eat at every Wendy’s along the way and get a real sense of what’s out there."
Yes, Wendy's is what "outside of NY" is all about.
This is why you need to write a book...."my umbrella proudly puffed out its chest into a giant "U" "
Ooh! I hadn't seen the new Amy Butler fabric yet. I'm going to dream something up for some of that. And as a true Seattle girl...love the rain. Except this year. Because we're still waiting for summer most days. (But I'm always thrilled to get a downpour if we've gone even a few days without).
I think those Jimmy Choos are the perfect cure for any rainy day blues. Ooh, I made a rhyme!
