DNR—a widely respected men's trade magazine with a century-old legacy—folded yesterday. In a blow-softening PR move, Condé announced that WWD will now integrate men's fashion coverage into its daily editorial, but the truth is that many DNR staffers have just lost their jobs. Plus, more mags will follow—and soon.
SIGH, cette merde pue.

SO. If you've lost your job amidst this mess, email me your story. No doubt you've got something up your sleeve—a hidden talent, a funny tale, an eye for spotting the most badass boutiques or bars in your nabe—that would make for a nice guest blogging spot at The Bee? I can't offer payment, but I can offer a Starbucks card or two and some free (not even remotely expert) life coaching. Perhaps someone will even up the ante with a fab giveaway for the bloggiest guest blogger of all? (Hint, hint, my "Shopping and Such" compadres.)

oh, this economy stuff is getting scarier and scarier! i haven't lost a job, but then again, i don't really have one. :) i've noticed less sales as of late, but i'm hoping it's just part of the normal up and down of being an artist. i saw jason priestley on a tv show the other night and he looked OLD. i couldn't believe it!
I have oft looked for a new job in the back pages of DNR... never did find one, though. The mag was always sitting around our office. We only had one subscription for the whole office- read *cheap*- and there was a little tag with everyone's name on it and we would all get our chance to read it and cross our name off the list.... but seeing as the boss regularly took it to the bathroom with him, not many of us partook in the pages after seeing his name had been scratched... ah, memories.
i've been trying to get into publishing for the past couple of month. and let me tell you...it's been tough! not only because of the competitive aspect of these positions, but SO many companies are placing hiring freezes at the very least and laying people off left and right in so many cases. i really hope this turns around because i do not want to see more magazines flop like this. i'm talking quality magazines just taking a turn for the worst. let's keep our fingers crossed that our favorites come out of this mess unscathed.
Geez...I'm there with you...and scared. There has been layoffs here and there at my work and we keep wonderingg, "who's next? ME?" It's like Survivor...only somehow way worse.
It's amazing how marketing gets put into the category of "overhead." It has me jumpy right now!
I would love to offer up a fab give away for the bloggiest guest blogger of all. We'll talk. Something does have to give. I heard or should I say....read a rumor that Domino was in trouble and was next. Say it isn't so! Enough already.
Leave it to the lovely Jae to offer up a gift! So sweet, as usual:) I think, post-holiday, I'll remind everyone about the idea. And we will talk. This could be fun!
Thanks for making me laugh a little today, because the big picture is not making me laugh at all. Yikes, it's grim. I'll be sure to look for your great guest blogger. Thanks!
i've stopped reading all economic news in the papers - too scary and so out of my control.
but as a menswear designer, the DNR news was a real punch in the gut. i've known many great people who have worked there - in some ways it felt like it was the glue that held the menswear business together.
on a happier note, your house is amazing. so much charm, personality. that period of architecture is one of my faves. you guys hit the jackpot!
i hear you, it does get scarier!!! aaaah, the old 90210 :D honestly, i kinda like them in comparison to the new ones.
This is all we ever talk about. It's very scary. I have a friend who works at mtv networks and they are laying off so many people and they ended up canceling their huge holiday party...obviously it's a bit tacky to have a huge party for millions of dollars, employees and celebs and then fire people bc the company has no money. Apparently they are offering everyone two free vacation days instead.
So, since I am self-employed with my photography and also work part-time in real estate I feel the downturn...I haven't had a closing since August and that was for a place I sold in late spring.
I think that this is a great idea and I'd participate in the giveaway...perhaps a small format photograph. keep us posted!
Really? That is so awesome, CC! Anyone would be beyond thrilled to win one of your photographs! This could be really fun. I'm going to remind everyone next week, or maybe after T-day. Our company did the same thing in canceling the holiday party. And we're making a donation to UNICEF instead of buying some stupid desk tchotchke that'll be re-gifted.
I think this a brilliant idea, Ms. Bee - if you need goodies, my crafty brain is at your disposal. I'd be happy to make something small and sweet.
(and I love your house - it makes my heart ache a bit - it is so sweet. i'd lean towards the white fireplace, myself ...)
This is why I LOVE you Lil Miss Bee...you're always thinking outside the box with that big ole heart of yours. Such a fab idea!
{and for the record...the market stinks out here in CA as well...scary indeed!}
It's odd, it's as if the rest of the world is finally feeling what those in the music industry have been dealing with for about a year now. Ever since this wild and crazy thing we call the "interweb" changed up music distribution, companies have been closing and going through systemic lay-offs, so it's just something I've gotten used to at this point.
On the positive tip; it's making people get smart, resourceful and uber creative, so it may not be the end of the world that the media continues to insist it is. Seriously, they need to stop scandalizing the news and just tell it like it is...ranting will now conclude. Have a fab day Bee!
i lost my job on monday (the 24th)! it was a bit of a shock, and i'm worried about what's going to happen in the next year... i will probably go back to self-employment, but even that isn't a guarantee, if the economy continues to go down the toilet.
i filed for unemployment, and actually, i am happy to have some time off before the holidays to get my xmas presents made (cuz i obviously can't buy any!). if you'd like me to guest blog, i can write about sitting on my ass, watching soaps, knitting... which really is not very exciting. :)
Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear that. Losing your job during the holidays has got to be that much more difficult, but I'm happy to hear you have something cooking on the side. Judging by your blog and etsy shop, I'm sure you'll be just fine:)
I would LOVE to have you guest blog! I'm going to post a reminder next week when everyone's back from the holidays. Will you email me and we can set something up for your guest post? This will be fun!
