Today I’m happy to be part of Bee’s economic stimulus package, seeing as I don’t have a job and doing this gives me an answer to the ever-impending question of, “What did you do today?”
You know how there are stages of grieving? Well, I believe there are stages of unemployment, too.
1. Feeling sorry for yourself
2. Relief because you kind of hated your job anyway
3. Excitement because you can watch Ellen and Oprah everyday
4. Optimism because you get a few interviews
5. Experiencing crushing blows to your ego because the interviewers never contact you
6. And when they do contact you it’s in the form of a rejection email (thanks for the effort, Banana Republic, but the fact that you rejected me makes me feel even worse)
7. Begin cycle again
I’m at the point now where I kind of never want to have a job again because I kind of like filling my days with trips to the library and blogging. But then there’s that little voice inside my head that says, “Remember how you don’t have kids and your house isn’t any cleaner since you’ve been home and you're doing nothing to help get rid of the ever-increasing student loan debt while your husband works and goes to law school?” When that voice enters the picture I definitely have my less-than-happy days. I’m sure some of you have felt the same way, so I offer my suggestions to get through the mess. Simply, find happiness in the everyday.

Find happiness in wearing cute shoes.

Find happiness by jumping on the bed.

Find happiness in giving or accepting a sincere compliment.

Find happiness in twirling.

Find happiness in holding hands.

Find happiness in swinging.
Because, for heaven’s sake, a job shouldn’t be validation that you are a happy and successful human being.

Thank you for that. I love your last comment and have to remind myself of that all the time.
That was one of the cutest things I have read in a long time. You're so right!
Now that was enjoyable and adorable.
Hmmm. nice post. LOVE those shoes and it makes me want to go find a swing!
i was about to go get ready for work, but will be heading back into the bedroom to jump on my bed a few times. why did i ever stop doing that anyway??? thanks for this fun list!
It sounds like if my dang job would just fire me already (I expect it daily), I would be a nicer, happier person.
I mean, minus the paycheck and all.
Thanks for the reminder that life is more than just a crummy job.
yes! this is lovely and so so true!
What a wonderful post! And I have to agree, wearing cute shoes (especially THOSE!) can really turn a normal day into a fantastic one.

Melanie- Thanks so much for your excellent post (and thanks to Bee for having you as a "guest blogger.") I am also in many of situations you mentioned and I find comfort in knowing; its not just me.
"Because, for heaven’s sake, a job shouldn’t be validation that you are a happy and successful human being." These are the most profound words I have heard in a long time, thank you.
Good Luck-Angie

It is all in how you look at things! Thanks for the smile.
Melanie, great post! I am a true believer in finding beauty in the everday. And when you've got big stresses in your life, it's so fufilling to find happiness in the simple things. I wish you the best of luck in your job search! :)
