A symbol of peace.

I love shoots like this. Photographer Jeff Olson lives in NYC, where pigeons are aplenty. And he's got me thinking...

What if there were one single dove amongst those pigeons?...

Could he make an impact? Would he know he was different? Would he miss his mom and dad?

I think family is relative... not just something you're born into but something you can create by the people and things with whom you surround yourself. Friends, loved ones... past and present. And even when they move on, they're still with us. I take comfort in that.

More from Jeff Olson's portfolio here.

these are really lovely and so inpiring. My mother has a magnet that says "Friends are the family we choose for ourselves" I love that...it's so true.

Lovely photos. I agree - a family is what you create. I have a small group of friends that I refer to as the "urban family" - they are friends, but really family!

"family is relative" - an adorable (unintended?) pun!

My parents and brothers spread across different countries and I miss them so much; I make an effort every day to keep in touch with them (we have epic email chains). x
