As you may recall, this Ligne Roset Togo Loveseat was my initial inspiration. I adore it in a way that words can't really describe.

But then the Great Depression of 2009 set in, along with reality, and I realized that a sleeper sofa would be more practical. Our den was originally a third bedroom, and though I'd like to utilize it as a quiet place to read and do yoga, it still needs to double as a guest room. Which brings me to today's challenge: I need to choose a sleeper sofa. And it needs to be 80" wide, max.
Take a deep breath and stop gagging. It's going to be OK. One day, when we have enough cash to build an extension on our house, I will replace my sleeper sofa with a fabulous 19th-century Chesterfield. But, for now, we must choose a pullout that works for our home. As Domino The Book of Decorating states (chapter one, page 16), it's important to "think about your lifestyle and decorate accordingly. Practical needs, not just style aspirations, should guide your plans." Hehem. Exactly. I'll continue...
As a reminder, the den connects our living room to our family room. It has French doors on one end and an open, arched doorway on the other, and so the room needs to maintain both a physical and visual flow.
Here are some of the elements that make up our still-quite-unfinished living room...

...and below are some details from our under-construction family room.

Soak it all in.
Now. First, I'll need to select a paint color for the den. I'm torn between a sunny marigold and a warm, brownish-gray. Which do you prefer?
Next, I'll need to select the couch. Naturally, I'm unsure of what color to get. I'd love something light gray, but I can't find one that meets our specific size requirements. So, I've narrowed down my selections and would love your opinion.
There's this sofa from Jennifer Convertibles...

...this one from Ikea...

...and a few Pottery Barn options, all of which would arrive well past my deadline and are considerably more expensive, but I enjoy pissing in the wind, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Exhale.

Exhale.
I know it's a lot to absorb, but try spending a day inside my head. It's tiring. And confusing. I've got a lot going on up there. Or maybe not enough. Either way, I need you. So, please. Weigh in. Make your selections. America is counting on you. And I trust you implicitly.
Yours truly,
Bee

i think i like the gray with the pottery barn sofa...tough choices though and so little time! i'm sure everything will come together! let us know what you choose. xo
i like them all...but i love the Reality Bites reference more. :)
Thank you for this. I just turned what was going to be our guest room into my own personal office/crafts room/lady space. So... a sleeper sofa is on my future as well. CB2 had a couple good ones too FYI.
Also.
I love the phrase "pissing in the wind." You've reminded me to incorporate more into my life. So thank you kindly.
Although it's a sleeper, and not super trendy : ) I think you have some great options!
Although I like the PB options too, it sounds like the JC option might be smarter right now, plus, you'll have a few extra bucks to put towards some kick as guest linens, feather mattress toppers, etc. to make your guests' stay a bit more luxurious.
Or you can just use that extra money to go towards your dream sofa when things pick up a bit : ) Either way, you've got some great design going on & I'm sure it will turn out splendidly!
Enjoy your redecorating that never seems to stop : - )
oh, how i feel your pain and appreciate your Reality Bites reference! my guest bedroom is the equivalent of your den at the moment. i'm loving both the JC and Ikea options, but when it comes down to it we all know chances are the JC is going to be more comfortable for your guests. best of luck!

Hi Bee,
These decisions are difficult, I understand...sigh.
Have you seen the flex sofa from CB2? I could be a cool option too, and it reasonably priced.
Best of luck, my friend.

New to the blog world, but decided to put my two cents in!! I love brownish-grey walls right now and am about to paint one of my walls this color! If you go with the darker wall, I'd say go with either of the first two couches!
Good luck!!
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I like the Ikea option best. Second to the Ligne Roset Togo Loveseat, of course, which is as close to a womb one can get in a sleeper sofa without getting too Mork from Ork, but yeah. Ikea--who woulda' thunk it?
where are you finding these ikats? the navy material you are putting in your inspiration photos? love love. Go with the Jennifer Convertible....less commitment but looks good.
Anon: I found the Ikats for the curtain fabric @ Calico Corners. And the chair is from Urban Outfitters at a really good price! I love Ikats so I've been collecting them in a file. Sorry about that...I probably should've sourced that stuff somewhere for all of you design lovers!
Girls: THANK YOU for your help! And special thanks to those who are voting on cheap options. I love the the PB sofas, but am really hoping to not spend a fortune. Which brings me to...
Bree/AmyLynn: I had not seen the CB2s! Thank you so much. I might try to check that Flex Sofa out in person somehow. The funny thing is, my two current couches are pretty much those exact colors (sage and green), so I was hoping to find something lighter, but the size is perfect and so is the price.
Rachel: Welcome! We love newbies. Make yourself right at home. We've got plenty of seating around here, as you can see:) xx
I like the first one from Pottery Barn the best. Piss in the wind, I say.
Did you check these out, too...

I think their prices are in line with PB, and there's a big selection. I don't know how long they take. Can you lie down on the sleeper before you buy? Because even if it looks good, it has to be comfortable to sleep on. But that might mean spending a little more (but worth it?).
I like the idea of the warm brownish-grey paint.
I love the other room collages, too.
Even better, did you check these...

we've loved everything we've bought from them (a lot), great quality, and if they're stocked, you could have it delivered next week. Priced better than pottery barn. Maybe you'd like the Dublin, Ian or Townsend in full size...
this is so weird. i'm currently in the market for the exact same thing (a sleepable 80 inch or so sofa), and i have it narrowed down to the jennifer convertible and the ikea beddinge resmo. i'm leaning toward the latter. if only it didn't have the metal legs. not to mention "assembly" which always scares me.
I like the JC. Actually more than the PB! (If you'd blinded them and asked which one was which I'd probably even flip them!)
I vote for Marigold. And having learned from my own mistakes... don't buy your dream couch until after your kids/pets are older! Go Ikea for now. :-)
I agree with Claire about the JC vs. PB options. I'd go with JC. But, I like the Ligne Roset & would make guests fight over who got it & who got the floor. Or get an airmattress, ha! As for the paint color? Sunny marigold, of course!
There's something very drive-in theater about the Ikea one - I kind of love it.
If you've got little feet or a messy husband or pets - try to get some pattern into that rug. Plain taupe will show every spec of dirt.
Thank you so much, guys! And Liza: Thank you for those links!! I always forget about R&B and it's such a good resource.
I am headed to Ikea now, so wish me luck. If all goes well, I may just come home with a sleeper sofa. If not, I'm off to JC. :)
if ikea doesn't work out, do you have raymour and flanigan in your area? they advertise delivery in 3 days or less i think. yes, sometimes form must follow function.
brownish-gray for paint.
i love the wall of bookcases! you have super taste! you will be a wonderful "easter dinner" host!
I've had the Togo sofas for over 30(Ligne Roset) years and they're still going strong - we've changed the (colour of the) covers several times but only because we moved from a very modern house to an old farm and then back to a town house; they look just a good in a contempory setting as they do in a rustic or more traditional deco environment :)
I have a faux-suede sleeper soafa as my main couch from Pier 1. It's not gorgeous but it's not all that attention-grabbing, so it's fine. and I could pick it up from the store (no shipping costs) and I used a coupon and got it under $700. If you haven't looked there, it's a good option. Out of these options, however, I like the Jennifer one. You can see a photo of mine here: http://magchunk.blogspot.com/2009/01/living-room.html
I've been wanting one of those deer heads for so long! I love them & hopefully will get one this year. great post.
Im still looking forward to seeing that deerhead.
