Dear Devon,

When you were born you had a full head of dark brown hair, long lashes, and deep blue eyes. The doctor said you had my cheeks and the labor nurse said your feet were big, but I couldn't remember ever seeing such tiny toes! You were perfect.

At 17 days old you had your first giggle. It was a gentle sound, like a high-pitched coo, but your intent was clear. We'd just finished the 4am showing of Changed You Fed You Why Won't You Go Back To Sleep?, and you couldn't help but rejoice in your victory. Devon: 17, Mommy: 0.

And when I feed you? Well. That's my favorite thing of all. Because you tuck your arm around my side and tickle me with your fingers. I can close my eyes and feel that tickle even when you're sleeping, which is important, because I know your hands won't always be so small.

This week we'll celebrate our first Thanksgiving together. It's a holiday where we eat lots of comfort food and think about the things that make us happiest. My little girl... years from now, if you should read this note, know that I have never been more thankful, happy, or at peace with myself than I am when I'm with you.

I love you with all my heart...
Mommy

Your letters to Devon always make me a little misty eyed. She is such a beautiful baby. I can't get over that full head of hair and those huge blue eyes.

Thanksgiving will be especially significant for me this year because my son turns 3 on Thursday. I can't help but remember our 4am mommy-son dates and him tickling me while he was feeding. Enjoy every moment, because you're right, she'll grow up right before your eyes.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful family!

And now I'm all teared up. : ) Not only was this a lovely note to Devon, but it reminded me of my Mom's Facebook status today. Today is my older brother's 38th birthday (the oldest of three). She said that 38 years ago she was the most thankful she'd ever been, because she was spending it with her perfect baby boy. Reading your note to Devon made my mom that much more "human" in my mind as I can picture her writing something very, very similar 38 years ago.

As always, a lovely post that enriched my day!
