The 00s

How do you sum up a year, let alone a decade?

Well... I know a lot of people are ready to kick oh-nine to the curb. It was rough. It knocked us around, took our lunch money, called us a fatty, and skipped town. Eff you, '09!

2009 was a beast, a bully. But it was a fitting end to a decade marked by excess and humility. '09 had nothing on '01, the year New Yorkers and the world lost their innocence. And it doesn't hold a candle to '04, the year an earthquake ripped open the middle of the ocean and killed 300,000 people. 2009 was tough, but we'd toughened up by the time it came around.

The double o's (I refuse to call them the aughts) were marked by amazing technological advancements and incredible amounts of bad reality TV. People became famous for being famous. We started talking less and typing, then texting, then tweeting more. It was really bad and really good all at once. A pupu platter of Paris and pop culture and politics and mustaches that went from ironic to really annoying. And Kanye. And cupcakes.
I doubt anyone will really know what these last ten years have meant until we've comfortably settled into the teens. But I hope that when we do, we'll take what we've learned and make the next ten years a bit brighter, kinder, and more meaningful.

On a personal note, I want to thank you for being such wonderful readers and for making this place one that I look forward to coming to every day.

Have a happy, happy new year!

Much love,
Bee

Bee...you know how to put everything so perfectly. I love your "voice" {as my friend, Monica once told me when I started blogging- 'you'll be great, you just need to find your voice'...those words stuck with me...}, well, your "voice" is totally music to my ears!

Have a very happy new year...2010 looks really cool to write, so it better be a great year!

Lil Bee you have really summed it up. Thank you for reminding us of things we should take into account and look back on in the last decade. I think humility is or should be our number one lesson from 2009. Happy New Year to you for a wonderful, adventurous 2010!

Great post! I imagine we'll be made fun of in the teens... for what we do best: blogging & tweeting. (not that it would stop me.)

Wow... A whole other decade gone already... hee hee cupcakes and too much reality tv. A fascination with pompous and extravagant antique royalty and the handmade movement. Two kids... too many extra pounds... not enough days at the gym. I think ringing in the new year with a cleanse, a renewed interest in yoga and a brilliant pair of shoes is in order. Out with the old and in with the fabulous! Here here!

I am with you...09 was a doozy for me as for so many people but in the scheme of the things, there were other years in this last decade that were far worse. I was more than ready to welcome 2010 and say good riddance to 2009. I think that my outlook is so different and I feel very positive about the coming year and decade. And, like you, I refuse to call the past decade the "aughts" ew.
