Do you remember your first?

Last night Paulie and I watched Welcome to Macintosh, a CNBC special on the history of the cultish computer. I guess it's to be expected when you couple a technology teacher (Paulie) and an iPhone app developer (me!), but we thought it was really interesting.

It got me to thinking about my first PC—a chunky, beige IBM that took up my entire desk in college. My roommate had a Brother (remember those?!), and this one was my mom's first (she still has it!):

How about you? Does your first computer completely date you or were you the proud owner of a bright pink laptop?!

I had a big ol' Gateway desktop that came in that cow print box. Seems like a lifetime ago :o)

Oh mine was a BEAST! I'd turn it on, go do something, make a sandwich, and then it would be ready to go.

OMG! I remember when my aunt had that very same apple computer. My first computer was an Apple. It was HUGE! And I don't really remember using it for much... Not at all like the one I use today.

I remember my first - I think it was an HP. That thing was slow... it was B.I. (before the internet) and I used it to type papers. It took me a long time to give up my electric typewriter but once we got the computer I was in love.

Soon after we got a new HP and AOL and life was good - minus that dial up noise! UGH HATED THAT!

I'm proud to say I'm only on my 3rd computer. I don't upgrade that often obviously. I've got my old mac and my old computer (both of which are circa 90 something but still run well).

I dream of owning newer stuff but then it boils down to wanting other stuff more.

I need to catch this tv show my boyfriend would love it!

Not sure if it was our first, but I remember my family's Apple IIe from the mid-80s. I used to play Where in World is Carmen Sandiego on it.

My family's first computer was definitely dated, but not so much compared to the one your mom has! (holy crap!) my boyfriend remembers the Brother, I think his bro actually had one, haha

Our first computer was also huge. I don't remember the brand but it was before the internet came along. We used it for school projects and games but that was essentially it. I remember the old clunkers in the computer lab at school though. We used them to play Oregon Trail... so awesome.

My first computer was actually a hand-me-down from my mom...an Oborne. When it was folded for transport it looked like a sewing machine. That totally dates me. Gosh, I feel old.

I'm only 24, but I remember when we got our first family computer I was in 6th grade-- it was an HP and I thought it was SO COOL because it came withe like 25 CD-ROMs....remember how cool we though encyclopedias and world maps were on CD-ROM's? We lived waayyy out in the boonies and had painfully slow dial up, and my mom would get so pissed that the phone always had a busy signal, but I was playing on AOL-- sorry!

Mom was talked into getting me one by a friend, looked very similar to the one in that pic. She remembers telling her friend that she didn't really want to get tied down and/or wasn't interested-it wasn't for her (that is true life foreshadowing!) Anyway, my mom too has saved ours, 'cause it's a relic, right!?!

i remember mine...but i can't remember what brand it was. i was, however, convinced that wargames could be played in real life with that blinking orange square on the black screen.
all i did was play typing games on it.
no wonder i'm such a fast typer.

My grandpa loved computers and gave us a Commodore 64 when I was around 6 or so. All I did on it was play Sea Route To India and Therapy. I loved it.

I think that that was also my first Mac. I can't remember what my first PC was but damn it was powerful and had a huge hd, probably less than a 1Go but it seemed huge at the time.

My grandpa was the first one in our extended family to jump on the computer bandwagon and he had that Mac! It was fantastically clunky. I loved that you had to restart the entire machine to run a new program.
